The Azahar Ensemble is a woodwind quintet founded in the National Youth Orchestra of Spain in 2010. The quintet was granted a scholarship from the “Fundación JONDE/BBVA” which enabled the young musicians to study chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik Basel (Switzerland) with Sergio Azzolini.

The Azahar Ensemble has been awarded several prices, among others at the renowned ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Since then, the quintet has already performed at numerous concert venues and festivals throughout Europe.

All five instrumentalists collaborate regularly with orchestras like the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonisches Orchester Lübeck, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra Basel, the Orchestra of the Opera Barcelona, the Camerata Berne, the Kammerorchester Basel, as well as in most of the Spanish orchestras like the Orchestra of the Spanish Radio and Television, the Orchestra of the Palau de les Arts (Valencia) etc.

Frederic Sánchez Muñoz, Miquel Ramos Salvadó and Antonio Lagares Abeal work as freelance musicians. María Alba Carmona Tobella is member of the the Philharmonia Zurich (Zurich Opera Orchestra) and of the ensemble Spira Mirabilis, María José García Zamora is solo bassoon player at the Komische Oper in Berlin.

After successful concerts at the Berlin Philharmonie, in Cologne, Vienna (Musikverein), Baden-Baden, at the Mozartfest in Würzburg and Rheingau Musik Festival, the ensemble is invited to perform at the Philharmonie Essen, in Salzburg, Innsbruck, Lucerne and Canada.

A recording of works by Joaquín Turina will be made in 2017 in cooperation with Deutschlandradio.

Azahar, derived from the Arabic az-zahr, is the name of the white, aromatically frangranting blossoms of the citrus and particularly orange trees.
